A pressure vacuum reactor working in combination with a vertical ballast water drop line, ensures a low temperature boiling condition that eliminates the majority of organisms. Any remaining bacteria are effectively eliminated by the UV Chamber mounted down steam on the pressure vacuum reactor.
Due to the highly effective and compact pressure vacuum reactor, the system does not need any filters nor chemicals, hence a minimum foot print is ensured.
KBAL has minimum installation requirements, which is a crucial factor for retrofits. There are no moving parts. It takes 1 – 2 weeks for installation to be completed and all preparations can be performed during operations. There is no need for 3D scanning and under normal circumstances dry dock is not a perquisite.
It is a flexible process. KBAL operates in synergy with submerged pumps and also there is no need for a separate system for AFT peak.

The system is very simple and operates fully automatically. Subsequently maintenance is system-automatic as well. Maintenance requirements are limited to the flushing of the Pressure Vacuum Reactor (lasts approximately 2 minutes) after each BWT and wiping of the UV sleeves. Finally, every 5 years the whole system needs to be overhauled.
- No chemicals
No safety issues, no handling of chemicals, no formation of explosive gases, no corrosion risks.- No filters
Eased installation, no turbidity, no clogging risk, no need for flow rate reduction due to back-flushing.- Low operational and maintenance requirements
System is fully automatic and can be easily operated from the cargo control room. Only basic BWT skills are required. It is a very simple system, comprised of a Pressure Vacuum Reactor and a UV chamber.- Low OPEX
Apart from UV power supply the only consumables are the UV lamps, with a lifetime of 4000 hours.
The UV sensor has a lifetime of 5 years and the Pressure Vacuum Reactor of 20.- Easy installation
The system is easily installed, within 1 – 2 weeks, which means considerable time and money savings

The KBAL Mk II Ballast Water Treatment System has achieved IMO revised G8 approval. Knutsen Group expects the system to be granted USCG type-approval by the end of 2020.
On the 23rd of May 2018, Knutsen Ballast Water AS submitted an official letter of Intent (LOI) to the USCG thereby initiating the formal approval process towards the USCG type approval of the KBAL system. Lloyds will act on behalf of USCG in this process, and was chosen by KBAL based on a thorough evaluation. The USCG type approval process is combined with a qualification process for the revised IMO G8 (MEPC 70)
